Montecarlo, a stunning town a few kilometres from Lucca, had been used in the past as a defensive bastion to protect the city-state and the surrounding valley from the attacks of the Republics of Florence and Pisa. Not only was Montecarlo known for its former military uses and for its historical and artistic beauties, but also as the land of the finest D.O.C. red wines – a designation obtained in 1969 – and the prestigious D.O.P. extra virgin olive oil.
Montecarlo owes its name to Charles IV of Bohemia, who established it in the 14th century. It is located on the world-famous Wine and Olive Oil Road of Lucca, on the ruins of the ancient Vivinaia.
Discover the secrets and the marvels of the city, strolling around its medieval alleys and visiting the magnificent Medici fortress, left unscathed, and the small theatre, a small jewel of Baroque art and one of the smallest theatres in Europe.
